Our school recently organized a visit to the iconic General Post Office (GPO) in Kolkata, a heritage building steeped in history. As we stepped inside, we were greeted by the warm smiles of GPO officials, who shared with us the fascinating story of this landmark building.
Our interview with the officials revealed that the GPO has been a witness to the city's evolution over the years. "We've seen generations of Kolkata come and go," one official told us, "and we're proud to have served them all."

We also had the opportunity to speak with regular customers who have been posting letters and parcels at the GPO for over 20 years. "I still remember coming here with my father as a child," one elderly gentleman recalled, "and now I'm bringing my own grandchildren to experience the nostalgia."
What made our visit even more special was bumping into a group of research scholars from Italy and France, who were in Kolkata to study the city's postal history. "We're fascinated by the GPO's architecture and its significance in Indian history," one of them told us.
After the interviews, we sat down to a cup of tea at the Parcel Cafe, a quaint little spot within the GPO premises. As we sipped our tea, we discussed our favourite moments from the visit and reflected on the importance of preserving our heritage.
Inspired by the experience, we wrote letters to our most dear person, pouring our hearts out on paper. And what better way to send them than by posting them in the large postal box right there at the GPO? As we dropped our letters into the box, we felt a sense of connection to the countless others who had done the same over the years.
Our visit to the GPO was truly an eye-opener, giving us a glimpse into the rich history of Kolkata and the significance of preserving our cultural heritage. We left with not just memories, but also a deeper appreciation for the iconic General Post Office.
