Ghat Cleaning

Sacred Spaces, Shared Responsibility

On 15th November, 2025, 15 students of classes 8 and 9 of Lakshmipat Singhania Academy accompanied by 3 teachers, contributed to the Ghat(pier) Cleaning Program as part of the River Festival organized by KultX, River Rangers and Living Waters Museum.
Gopal Ghat, Kumartoli Ghat and Natherbagan Ghat was the venue of the cleaning program which started with a heritage walk through the ghats, where the students learned about the tradition of naming and owning ghats by rich businessmen of the colonial era, the introduction of the Kolkata-Puri railway line and the use of stones from factories of Glasgow, which paved the paths beneath the heaps of flowers and plastic strewn now.
The students collected wet and dry plastic waste in sacks along the river bank. This hands-on experience of collecting waste enabled the students to realise the amount of waste generated on a daily basis owing to the nonchalance of the people who throw plastic around. Several sacks of plastic waste were collected, which would then be sent for recycling by the organizing team.
The students not only learnt about the importance of action alongside awareness but they also united together to take the first step towards environmental cleanliness. They showed their concern for the environment and acted responsibly. The enthusiastic participation of the students brings hope for the days to come.
