Where the Past Still Speaks

As part of their curriculum, students from Class 11 and 12 (Arts stream) visited the Indian Museum in Kolkata, which was established in 1814 by the Asiatic Society. As India's oldest museum and one of the nation's most important centers of knowledge, it was created to safeguard and explore India's natural and cultural legacy. The museum has evolved into an essential institution for scholarship and learning. Its extensive galleries contain a remarkable collection of historic sculptures, currency, fossils, Egyptian mummies, artworks, and archaeological artifacts, providing the students with a rich and captivating glimpse into India's history.

The museum also qualifies as a heritage landmark because it embodies more than two hundred years of unbroken historical presence. Its impressive building, crafted in a traditional European architectural manner, displays tall columns, spacious hallways, and elevated ceilings that mirror early 19th‑century colonial architectural concepts. The edifice itself serves as a testament to the colonial era, when museums fulfilled an important function in recording knowledge, culture, and scientific exploration.

The Indian Museum continues to inform and captivate visitors from across the globe. By protecting valuable artifacts and presenting ancient societies, customary art traditions, and natural science, it connects the past with the present. As a custodian of knowledge and culture, the museum endures as an enduring symbol of education, heritage, and collective human civilization. This enriching visit offered Class 11 and 12 Arts students a deeper appreciation of their cultural roots.
